CARAVAN ELECTRIC BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEMS:
TIPS FROM ARROW CARAVANS

The most effective and efficient type of brakes today for caravans and camper trailers are electric brakes. There are many different types and makes of electric brake systems, but they all operate the same way: power is fed from the vehicle's stoplights into an electric brake controller device attached under the dash of the vehicle, then back to the caravan through the seven-point plug and socket. Once a brake controller is adjusted correctly the driver will be able to slow the car and caravan with the same force on the brake pedal as needed to stop the car by itself.

Older caravans with over-ride hydraulic or mechanical brakes can be successfully converted to an electric system. So how do you find the best electric brake control system for your caravan? We asked the experts at Arrow Caravans for some suggestions:

  • Choose a controller with 'Motion Sensing'. A pendulum sensor sends a variable amount of power to the caravan brakes in proportion to the stopping motion of the motor vehicle, which delivers more responsive braking in all situations.
  • If you own a large caravan its best to choose a controller with Manual Control option. This is a helpful feature to minimise caravan sway or instability.
  • Number of axles: one size does not fit all. Make sure the brake system is suitable for the number of axles on your caravan.
  • Professionally install your electric brake system. Connecting the controller into the wrong section of the car's electrical circuit can cause expensive damage to other electrical components.

For more information on the Electric Control Brake Systems contact the team at Arrow Caravans. http://www.arrowcaravans.com.au/

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT FUEL: THE RESULTS

Here are some of your suggestions on how to save fuel when you travel:

  • Don't overload your van with unnecessary items.
  • Consider converting your 4WD to gas.
  • Drive at a speed commensurate with the road i.e slower when climbing, faster when coasting or slightly downhill; keep engine revs down!
  • Leave home earlier so there is no need to hurry.
  • Ensure majority of items stored in caravan are in front of the axle.
  • Keep the load that you carry as low as possible, i.e. if you require extra water on your trip, just take water in your caravan's tank and empty drums. Fill these drums at your last town centre (this applies to going Outback).
  • Avoid carrying luggage and gear on the roof of the car.
  • Make use of discount vouchers.
  • Reduce speed. Reducing from 95 to 85 makes a big difference.
  • Consider fuel additatives, which can reduce fuel consumption on vehicles by up to 20%.
  • Consider a lower van to avoid drag.
  • Steady acceleration.
  • Consider travelling in the morning. The wind can be stronger of an afternoon.
  • Talk to other van and motorhome people about the best servo stations.
  • Plan to travel to the one place and set up a base there. Have daily excursions only with the car.
  • Try to keep your vehicle in good order, well tuned, check tyre pressure, check the caravan wheel bearing, van wheel alignment and the van brakes are not over adjusted.

The centrepiece of this event is the Remembrance Field at 113 Mount Stirling Road, Glen Aplin, where a field of Flanders poppies blooms throughout November to represent the way the fallow wheat fields of France appeared before World War One. COOL RUNNINGS:
TIPS TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FRIDGE FROM CAMEC

In general terms there are two types of fridges available for use in caravans and motorhomes, compressor driven fridges and absorption style fridges.

A compressor fridge is a 12v/240v version of your fridge at home, the compressor changes the refrigerant from a liquid to gas which cools the evaporator plate.

The main advantages of compressor fridges are:

  • very efficient on 12v and 240v
  • excellent cooling performance, even in extreme outdoor temperatures
  • tilt resistant to 30 degrees
  • ideal for solar set ups
  • requires minimal ventilation
  • better variable temperature control, even up to deep freeze

The absorption style work by heating ammonia into liquid which is then mixed with hydrogen to evaporate the liquid ammonia and draw the heat from the fridge interior.

The main advantages of absorption fridges are:

  • silent operation
  • convenience of three energy sources
  • allows longer stays without the need for expensive solar alternative.
  • requires substantial ventilation, which may require additional fans to assist

For more information on the 'coolest' fridge for your caravan or motorhome contact the team at Camec . http://www.camec.com.au/
