DO YOU FEEL LIKE A ‘FIFTH WHEELER’?

If you think no one ever needs a fifth wheel – think again. A fifth wheeler might just be the best mobile home you ever purchased.

We asked the team at Dryden Trailers to explain what a Fifth Wheeler is all about.

What is a fifth wheeler?

Fifth wheel trailer homes have an extension on the front that extends over the tow vehicle and sits on a round plate that looks like a wheel – hence the name ‘fifth wheel’. This wheel rests on the tow vehicle, usually in the centre and directly above the rear axles and provides the support for the caravan.

What is the difference between a fifth wheeler and standard caravans?

A fifth wheel trailer is much different to a caravan. The fifth wheeler is pulled by a larger vehicle with either a king pin or drop away ball coupling. The beauty of these couplings is that they are very similar to what semi trailers use so it makes the trailers extremely easy to tow. You can also have a trailer that is 27ft long but only be actually towing around 19ft. This is due to the shape of the fifth wheeler. The top section of the trailer is actually being carried on the back of your vehicle not being towed. Overall a fifth wheel trailer gives you the benefit of having a large trailer with spacious living areas that is extremely easy to tow while also having the option to unhook the trailer and drive your vehicle unloaded.

What sort of tow vehicle should I have?

The type of tow vehicle that you will require depends on the size of trailer that you want to purchase. Some small trailers can be towed by the very common one tonne ute or small 4WD's. As you go larger in trailer size you will need to do the same with your vehicle. We suggest vehicles such as the American F Series, Chevy Silverado, Dodge Ram, Hino Series, Isuzu, Iveco, Toyota Dyna and Mitsubishi Canter. All of these models are small trucks with excellent towing capacity.

What licence do I need?

The licence that you require will depend on what type of vehicle that you purchase. The trailer that you tow does not determine what licence you need to acquire. Special licences aren’t required until your trailer exceeds 9 tonne. Over 9 tonne you will need to have an articulated licence.

Where can I take the trailer?

The fifth wheel trailer travels best on conventional roads. It can also be taken onto dirt roads but they are not suitable for taking them on roads that are only accessible by four wheel drives.

How much do they cost?

Trailers are custom built, no trailer is the same. Prices range from $98,400 for a 22ft trailer (tare weight of 2500kg) all the way up to $220,000 for a fully optioned 33ft trailer with slide out (5400kg).*

COOKING WITH ROBYN:
Pack Away the Kilometres not the Kilojoules

Travelling with children is often filled with mixed blessings. The joy of seeing our children playing for hours in our magnificent countryside well away from electronic distractions and the tremendous experience for them to meet so many interesting characters along the way are just two of the pleasures of travelling. The challenges come from hours on the road and how to keep them well fed while not making too much work for the adults.

It is vitally important for both children and adults to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables every day to not only maintain good digestive health but also a sunny disposition. It's hard to be happy if your body and brain is lacking good nourishing food or suffering dehydration. With recent findings on artificial ingredients and the role they play in child behaviour, not to mention studies on the clogging effects of trans fatty acids found in chips, burgers, hydrogenated oils and other processed foods it is time to take the hint and pack a variety of healthy foods for the road.

Did you know that good quality raw vegetables and fruits come packed with their own digestive enzymes? These little workers help us by sharing the role of breaking down the food in our digestive system so we can absorb the available nutrients. Many of us are aware of the need to replace good gut bacteria and include yoghurt or pro-biotic drinks in our daily diet. It's always a great idea to read the labels though because some pro-biotic drinks contain high quantities of sugar in all disguises which do us little good in the end.

Try a variety of fresh asparagus, carrot sticks, broccoli flowerets, disks of corn, snow peas and beans then dip them into hummus, mashed avocado or baba ganoush - there are some fantastic commercially available brands around. Read the labels, be wary of anything with numbers or hydrogenated oils. Toasted wedges of flat bread also make great dippers.

Have little packs of olives, nuts, dried fruits, ginger, popcorn, quarters of oranges, rings of apples or grapes. A mixture of toasted sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds tossed in a little soy sauce provides a great mineral boost. Hard boiled eggs provide protein and minerals, steamed sweet potato is a fabulous low GI food and savoury biscuits with cheese is another good protein hit.
