imageHAVE HOME WILL TRAVEL: MOTORHOME BUYING TIPS

If you want the convenience of a car with the comforts of home, think motorhome: literally an apartment on wheels. They come in many shapes and sizes so here are a few tips to help you make the right purchase.

1. Decide how much space will you need

Do you want a very compact vehicle or do you want loads of space? Size does matter - how you use it and what you feel comfortable in. Will you want to carry passengers? If you do, make sure the vehicle you choose has a sufficient number of passenger seats, with seatbelts fitted, to accommodate the size of your party.

2. Decide how far you are going to go

All motorhomes have superb specifications for their price. But, for example, you will need to decide if you are going to use the vehicle on caravan sites which have full facilities, in which case you may not need every piece of equipment on offer. If you're planning to travel off the beaten track, you will want everything on board.

3. Decide how big is big enough

Your motorhome needs to be large enough to be comfortable and small enough to be easy to drive. Try to narrow your search to one of three main categories:

Category Description Approximate Weight Toilet & Shower on board
Class A Coach like in their looks and very comfortable and roomy inside. Coaches and buses too are often used for Class A conversions. > 4.5 tonnes yes
Class B Usually constructed on a van chassis with elevated roof lines but no modifications to the length or width of the original chassis. This category includes small vans converted to campervans. upto 4.5 tonnes usually
Class C Usually manufactured on a conventional truck cab and chassis. The ‘C’ class motorhome has a section over the top of the cabin - termed a cab-over. 4.5 to 5.4 tonnes usually

Don’t forget that in some states motorhomes exceeding 4.5 tonnes require a light truck licence.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Know how everything works and discover those items hidden under the floor or behind wall panels. Make sure you spend time to understand the differences between 12V and main power and how important this is to operating the features of your preferred RV.

5. Visit the shows

Motorhomes come in all sizes, shapes and prices - so study your options to find the RV that's right for you. Attend Motorhome shows, talk to friends and relatives about their experiences, browse internet sites and speak to multiple dealers.

6. Visit manufacturers' websites for ideas and inspiration:

www.horizonmotorhomes.com.au
www.jayco.com.au
www.paradisemotorhomes.com.au
www.suncamper.com.au
www.sunliner.com.au
www.trakka.com.au
www.winnebago.com.au

Or try before you buy:

If you would like to hire a motorhome or campervan before making your life changing purchase why not visit the following companies to see how the RV really performs under Australian conditions:

COOKING ON THE ROAD WITH ROBYN COOK

There has been a great furore recently about imported seafood containing all sorts of things that seafood just shouldn't have. Locations such as the majestic Sunshine Coast in Queensland (page 17 of Robyn's book shows her front yard at the caravan park at the time) enjoy some of the best and cleanest seafood in the world. As with all cooking the recipe should simply be a guide while you utilise whatever ingredients you have on hand. Some of the best dishes come through necessity which this recipe originates from.

Pincushion Prawns
What you need:
1kg green prawns
drizzle of olive oil
crushed garlic
onion cut into fine wedges
packet of Laksa or other light Thai curry paste
your choice of vegies - carrot, zucchini, capsicum, frozen or dried peas
a cup or two of water
several glugs of fish sauce
half a cup of coconut milk lemon or lime juice
and if you can find some - coriander

Preparation:
Chop all vegetables. Peel and de-vein prawns. Pour olive oil in large saucepan and gently fry the onion garlic and curry paste. Add all the vegies and stir. Pour in water and fish sauce, cover and simmer until vegies are cooked but still firm. Add prawns, coconut milk, juice and simmer until prawns are cooked - just a few minutes. Add the chopped herbs and serve with noodles.

The Holiday Lifestyle Cookbook is available from Robyn Cook by phone or fax to 07 5445 9923 or email to piproductions@ozemail.com.au

Payment by cheque or direct deposit only, sorry no credit cards. $12.50 includes GST and Postage to anywhere in Australia. Post your order and payment to 2 Diedrichs Court Palmwoods Queensland 4555

wineTASTE A TAILGATE OR TRY A LEAF SPRING

We have found the perfect complement to Robyn’s recipes: RVINO Wines. The idea for RVINO Wines originated from wine maker Ben Rigg’s shared passion for escaping to the open road in a family RV and a long-running love of Australian wines. The result is two fresh and very unique wines: Tailgate Shiraz and Leaf Spring Chardonnay. Check them out at: www.rvino.com.au
