SIDETRACKS
The team at We Love This Country Team has collected plenty of travel notes on our travels around Australia. In this new feature we would like to share some of our local favourites...
BICHENO, TAS:
Where is it?
185 km north-east of Hobart on the Tasman Highway.
(See it on Google Map View Larger Map )
Why go?
Bicheno is a cherished holiday destination for sand and sea seekers of all ages. Everybody loves its mild temperatures, and both parents and children adore the white, family-friendly beaches that sprawl the coast in stretches of white sand.
Three things to see:
- The grave of Waubedebar, after whom Waubs Harbour was named. Waubedebar was stolen from her aboriginal tribe as a teenager to become a "sealer's woman." Her bravery in swimming out to rescue two sealers in a storm is commemorated by a headstone.
- The Governors Island Marine Reserve is an unforgettable natural beauty. View this fascinating underwater scenery from a glass-bottomed boat, or hire some scuba equipment and get up close and personal with this underwater world.
- Meet some charming locals on one of the nightly penguin tours. This is an exciting and educational wildlife experience, and the guides are super friendly and really know their stuff. (www.bicheopenguintours.com.au)
Local favourites:
Meander down to Waubs Bay and enjoy a lovely dinner overlooking the picturesque scenery. Locals say it’s hard to pick a favourite restaurant, but they do concede that seafood is the local speciality.
- There’s an excellent fishing spot off the Gulch Jetty that you won’t necessarily read about in guide books. This secret spot is a delight to experience at sunset -imagine reeling in squid, mackerel and barracuda as the sky above you turns brilliant shades of orange.
- Make like a local and enjoy Whaler’s lookout, or take an early morning stroll down one of the deserted northern beaches. These white sandy stretches offer the early riser an unspoilt atmosphere.
Did you know?
Bicheno was established as a whaling centre as early as 1803. Sealers and whalers began using Waubs Boat Harbour as a base for their activities on the east coast. Despite the charming residents you’ll encounter these days, once upon a time the sealers and whalers here were infamous for cruel behaviour and the primitive and dangerous lives they led.

DENILIQUIN, NSW
Where is it?
Approximately 725 kilometres south west of Sydney and 285 kilometres north of Melbourne at the intersection of the Riverina and Cobb Highway.
(See it on Google Map View Larger Map )
Why go?
Deniliquin is legendary in the wool trade and is the birthplace of the Peppin, a large merino sheep able to withstand the harsh conditions of the area.
Three things to see:
- The island sanctuary contains the burial site of 'Old Jack', a member of the Melville gang, bushrangers who visited Deniliquin in 1851. Apparently Old Jack was so drunk that his compatriots tied him to a tree and threw turpentine over him, thinking it to be water. As his hollering increased one gang member approached him with a candle and Jack burst into flames. Once untied he threw himself in the river but died two days later.
- The Australian Ricegrower's Cooperative Mill, on Barham Rd, is the largest rice mill in the southern hemisphere with a milling capacity of 50 tonnes per hour. It has a visitor's centre open week days, which looks at the process of growing and milling.
- The Peppin Heritage Centre in George St focuses on the history of the wool industry with historic photographs and displays, exhibitions, crafts and shops. It has an historic classroom which provides fascinating insight into nineteenth-century pedagogy. The centre also contains the original Wanganella lock-up which features a Headless Horseman sound and light show.
Local favourites:
- Where do the locals like to unwind? Edward River Pub (6 Davidson St, Deniliquin) was established in 1876 and is located very close to the river. It’s flooded so many times they’ve lost count!
- Residents guarantee that the Globe Hotel on Cressy St serves up a great value for money feed.
- How do locals spend a leisure day? They’ll take a picnic or forest stroll on the edge of the river and watch the boats go by.
Did you know?
Deniliquin lies at the centre of four irrigation districts which cover 725 000 hectares, the largest area under irrigation in Australia.

PORTLAND, VIC
Where is it?
Approximately 362 kilometres west of Melbourne.
(See it on Google Map View Larger Map )
Why go?
Once a strong rival to Melbourne as the commercial capital of Victoria, Portland is a deepwater port and a town studded with historic landscapes which reflect its rich heritage.
Three things to see:
- The Portland Maritime Discovery Centre functions as the local information centre and displays local maritime history. Learn about whaling, navigation, rescue, shipwrecks, marine exploration, and the story of European immigration and settlement.
- The Botanic Gardens were established in 1857 with the assistance of Ferdinand von Mueller, the creator of the curator of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The land was prepared with the help of 80 Chinese prisoners from Portland Gaol and boasts croquet lawns, historical trees and impressive floral displays.
- The World War II Memorial Lookout Tower in Wade St offers fine panoramic views of Portland and the surrounding district. This 25-metre structure was built as a water tower in the 1930s. In the 1990s it became a lookout and museum with displays relating to Portland's involvement in World War II.
Local favourites:
- Locals suggest a great spot to observe excellent views can be found up the hill from the Bridgewater kiosk. Pull in at the carpark opposite the tearooms and check it out. This is the starting point of a strenuous two-hour walk due south past Seal Caves to a viewing platform at Cape Bridgewater that overlooks one of the largest colonies of Australian fur seals on the mainland. The return journey takes in views of the Bridgewater Lakes to the north and Discovery Bay to the west.
- Residents know the best place around to see local birdlife is the treasured Fawthorp Lagoon, named after Portland's first harbour master. This permanent wetland offers five kilometres of gentle walking tracks.
- The people of Portside love their fishing, and you’ll find them at the breakwaters of Portland's harbour. While many tourists hire boats out here, locals suggest you can still take quite the catch on any of the rock ledges or piers. The area is protected from westerly winds which means you’ll find fisherman here in any weather conditions.

The city of Portland is the oldest European settlement in Australia.

10 TIPS TO MAKE A GREAT CAMPING EXPEDITION
Camping holidays are a great time to relax, soak in new surroundings and spend quality time with friends and family. But every now and again there’s that disaster story - the sleepless night, the mosquito army, the tent that fell down, flew away or sunk. Follow these handy hints below to ensure your next camping trip is memorable for all the right reasons.
1) Finding Mr Right: the tent for you
Make sure your tent is light and portable as this makes for easy transportation. Also consider space (remember you not only need to sleep here, but also stow your gear), and strength (choose a tent with sturdy zippers and double sewn seams.)
2) PLS! Choose your spot carefully
There are three major factors to consider here. Firstly, how Protected is the area from the elements? Secondly, how Level is the ground - choosing the highest level point to set up camp is essential. And finally, what is the Surface like? Dry mud for example will bog with rain.
3) ‘She’ll Be Right’ Usually Means She Won’t: Setting up Secrets
Give yourself the best chance of success, try time your arrival so that you can set up in daylight, this helps with choosing the right location and orchestrating the setup. And remember, don’t cut corners, always stake your tent if the ground allows. What seems secure one minute can be carried away by winds the next.
4.) Sleep soundly wherever you are.
Don’t expect sweet dreams on hard ground! Soft bedding options range from light weight sleeping pads to luxury camp stretchers. Stretchers lift you off the ground and cradle you in comfortable canvas. Never mind if you don’t have room to pack a pillow, or don’t want to spend on the specialized compressible variety, bring a pillow slip and fill it with clothes. Voila! Sleep tight.
5.) Slapping, Wacking and Itching- There’s a better way to deal with pests.
Combat mosquitos with repellent and citronella candles, and deter those pesky flies from the picnic table by sprinkling a sponge with lavender oil and placing it in an open jar under the table. Avoid ant invasions by disposing of food scraps and cover your skin to protect from ticks - check armpits, groin, and hair lines especially for these little suckers!
6.) Cleanliness is next to godliness
Check ahead if your camp site will have showering facilities. If not you can use a large plastic bag or try a solar-heated camp shower. This can double as a faucet and is ideal for dish rinsing and hand washing. If facilities are provided remember to wear thongs to protect your feet from nasties, and perhaps some change - some are coin operated.
7.) Come on baby light my fire
Campfire’s epitomise camping and can be great- they can also be very dangerous. First check fire restrictions in the area, if permitted start a fire simply with paper, matches and kindling (believe it or not dryer lint is very effective, so start collecting now!) Avoid using charcoal lighter fluid, gasoline or kerosene - and most importantly, remember the marshmallows.
8.) Bon-Appetite!
To ensure a great meal keep food supplies well protected- store eskies in the shade and keep dry foods well sealed so nothing else gets to it before you do. Double check when packing your cooking utensils and consider space saving solutions eg. Saucepans can also be used as mixing bowls.
9.) Make Camping With Kids Wonderful Not Woeful!
Camping is a great experience for kids but to ensure it’s also a great experience for parents there are a few things to remember. Allow extra time for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, from travel time and setting up to hiking and packing up. Also, encourage kids to experience their surroundings and perhaps leave any antisocial toys at home. Why not trade video games for a deck of cards for rainy day solutions.
10.) Camping with pets: Are you barking mad?
Holiday Parks often do not allow domestic pets (except for Seeing Eye dogs) as they disrupt the native animals’ environment, so check to see if your Holiday Park allows pets before bringing Rover. And once he’s there, it’s your responsibility to dispose of any faeces as this can carry disease harmful to wildlife.
But most of all to ensure everyone can enjoy camping time and time again, treat every site with respect and take all your rubbish with you! Relish your adventure and remember- mishaps can always blossom into hilarious memories…

COOKING WITH ROBYN
Holiday lunches should be long and relaxed, family affairs with children playing and adults yarning. Recalling long summer lunches down at your favourite beach from years gone by when families gathered around great platters of food. One of the key differences between then and now, however, is the fabulous variety of food introduced by our cultural diversity We can't get enough of these good healthy heart foods - although we do like some salt. The best kind of salt is the grey moist salt that still has loads of other key minerals.
Many peoples favourite platter is the Antipasto. Many of these ingredients can be prepared from scratch or simply decanted from bottles and tins. Marinating olives and feta isn’t difficult and can be done at home.
In a clean jar add the following, then seal and store in the fridge.
300g Kalamata olives
2 sprigs of fresh mint
2 red chillies
1 sprig fresh rosemary
2 fresh basil leaves
good pinch of salt - grey, moist salt is much better for you because it contains other minerals
olive oil to fill jar - extra virgin of course
For great dippers cut some pita or Lebanese bread into wedges, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with spice seeds like caraway, fennel or dill seeds, and some of that good salt you've bought for the marinated olives. A little chilli powder is also a great addition. Bake in a slow oven until lightly crisp. These wedges can be stored in an airtight container and used with avocado dip.
Hass avocados are now in season and are absolutely delicious. Mash them with a splash of lime juice, a pinch of the good salt, and a generous grind of pepper. You can, of course, adjust these seasonings to taste.
To assemble an Antipasto platter select a range of fresh and preserved meats – for example combine a nice hot cabana with semi-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, thinly sliced salmon, asparagus, artichoke hearts sliced in quarters, and dolmades. Add to this some fresh vegies such as broccoli, carrot sticks and avocado.
