WOMEN WHO LOVE THIS COUNTRY
Part 2: During the Trip
Tips for the duration of the trip with special guest and sunbird Judy Mann
Perceptions About Food On The Road
“For those of you who think you might live a less quality lifestyle… this is not so. We enjoy home cooking as normal and also look forward to checking out the local area of the moment for different produce (i.e. fish jams, sauces, cheese, fruit, etc). The variety is extensive!
Buying and Storing Food
Whilst traveling in your RV it is best to buy quantities of food that will only last until the next grocery shop. This is a great way to save space and ensure no food goes to waste. I bring along some air tight storage containers for items that are prone to going stale, such as biscuits, but generally I leave food in their original packets and tie a rubber band around them once they’ve been opened. When you consider how much space you’re wasting by half filling a storage container with every ingredient in your pantry you will realise why original packages are the best solution.
Keep in mind also that some small country towns don’t engage in Sunday trading. So, if you’re hitting the outback, try to schedule food stocking on any of the other six days!

Drive Intelligently
As an RV driver you have the responsibility to take the required precautions when traversing the long distances between your desired destinations. I generally work on the stop-every-two-hours-theory. It is a good way to break up the journey and rejuvenate before heading off for the rest of the trip. Depending on the local scenery, some regions are easier to take a break in than others, but, even on monotonous roads, make sure you get out and walk around the caravan every time your feet start falling asleep or your eyelids gain weight.
It is also good to keep a reasonable distance between your vehicle and the one in front. If you consider the difference in stopping times required for a small hatchback and a lumbering RV, there is little doubt left as to the dangers of following too closely.
Getting Off the Road and Into Your Site
It’s smart to be off the road by 4:30 pm, avoiding the roos and giving yourself enough time to set up. If you are fortunate enough to have a choice of site at the caravan park consider the prevailing wind direction and choose the best area for your awning.
Tapping Local Knowledge Sources
Information centres provide excellent knowledge, maps, and displays. Aside from information booths, chatting to interesting, likeminded travelers always offers something to learn.
Collecting Mail On the Go
If you require a mail collection service checkout the magazines. For a modest fee a company, such as Post Haste Australia, provide a service we have found to be very satisfactory.
Making Use of Technology
I bring along our laptop for the journey, since it provides a great way to keep in touch with family and friends. You can use email to contact anyone, anywhere in Australia for minimal cost, providing the region in which you are travelling has wireless access. We have also used a two way radio in our RV to communicate with close travelers. Most people can easily get by with just their mobile phones- again, providing the region has coverage.
The degree to which you rely on different technology depends entirely on your traveling style and where you want to travel. I recently met a couple from France who relied heavily upon cutting edge technology to travel, but I personally prefer to keep it minimal and enjoy the simplicity of life on the road!
Looking After the Environment
While you should always be conscious of how you are treat ing the environment, the parks are usually so well equipped being earth-friendly is easy. I use biodegradable laundry detergent so as to leave only the smallest possible footprint behind. When traveling away from the convenient facilities of a caravan park, more thought should go into issues such as how you will dispose of rubbish. You can also help minimize your environmental impact by not overstocking your RV, making it lighter and more fuel efficient.
Using Amenities
It is common for inexperienced travelers to be wary of using amenities provided by parks. My own experiences have taught me that Australian caravan parks consistently have a high facility standard. I’m currently staying in a very small park which, despite its size, has just about the best bathroom and laundry facilities that I’ve come across. While it’s true that some of the older parks can be a little scruffy, you can be quite confident that whichever park you find yourself staying in will have sufficient lighting along pathways and around buildings, coded or key locks on amenities, and security gates at the park entrance to prevent non-visitors from entering the premises. At first we bought torches in case we needed to find our way late at night to the bathroom, but never found any real use for them. We find parks to have a good community atmosphere and a very high standard of security.
Keep the Weight Down
So you might have started light, but can you keep it that way? When we left our house five years ago we made a commitment to travel with a minimal load. I still consider this to be a crucial habit to maintain, yet we still find ourselves with excess baggage. The focus should be on quality, not quantity when buying new gadgets. If you’re unsure of what new equipment is available to lighten your load and increase your comfort, a great source of information is the range of RV magazines and the We Love This Country website. They all offer practical advice on traveling comfortably and efficiently.
Post Trip Tips
I don’t know if there will ever be life after the trip! Our lifestyle is completely sustainable. We’ve put everything in storage and our house is rented out.

NELSON BAY, NSW:
Where is it?
New South Wales Central Coast, 223 km north of Sydney via the Pacific Highway.
(See it on Google Map View Larger Map )
Why go?
Nelson Bay is the main town for Port Stephens and it would be hard to find anywhere better equipped for aquatic pursuits . On the town’s doorstep, within the sheltered arms of the bay, find calm beaches ideal for small children, while the coastal beaches, just a five-minute drive away, are washed by booming waves.
Three things to see:
- For a dose of Nelson Bay history head to the eastern end of Nelson Bay to an elevated piece of land known as Nelson Head. Here sits the Inner Lighthouse, built in 1872 but still operating and classified by the National Trust. Originally lit by three kerosene lamps, electric lights were installed in 1946 and the system has been recently automated.
- The diving and snorkeling just east of Nelson Bay is exceptional and the tiny promontory of Fly Point is an aquatic reserve with prolific marine life. If you find the season too chilly to dive, check out the scenery above water- the point has spectacular sweeping views of the Bay.
- Visit the adrenalin pumping Toboggan Run complex and experience its winding 700-m downhill toboggan track with automatic up-hill tow, mini-golf, radio-controlled boats, video games, table games, canoe rides, plaster painting, Krazy Kars and indoor rock climbing. The complex is ideal for children and open seven days a week. (02) 4984 1022.
Local favourites:
- According to locals the three to four kilometer bushwalk through the fire trails off Wallawa Road to the foot of Gan Gan Hill and back is “beautiful”. They advise visitors to take a drink and mobile phone with them.
- The Pure Pizza Cafe is the place to get great, casual pizza in Nelson Bay. This café is the local favourite - so get in early!
- You can’t leave without trying the local oysters, fresh from the bay. Holberts Oyster Farm, located in Salamander Bay, offers magnificent views whilst enjoying Port Stephens finest quality oysters which are shucked daily.
Did you know?
Port Stephens is the permanent home of 160 bottlenose dolphins, and port-in-passing for over 3000 migrating humpback whales- so it’s almost guaranteed that you will encounter one of these friendly creatures during your visit.

Why go?
Situated close to Adelaide, with restaurants, seafood cafes, tearooms, museums, historic buildings and galleries to explore, Victor Harbour makes a great day trip or holiday destination.
Three things to see:
- A ride of Australia’s only horse-drawn tram service along the cause way is a must-do when you're in Victor Harbor. A return trip takes 40 minutes, but you can ride one-way & walk back. (08) 8551 0720.

Local favourites:
- Waitpinga Beach is a quiet spot and the attraction here is the kangaroos. Spot these native animals grazing on the hills in the late afternoon and early morning. For surfers the break at this beach is excellent, with large waves rolling in off the Southern Ocean.
- The Grosvenor hotel offers quality meals in a relaxed family environment for both visitors and locals alike. With lots to keep the kids entertained, you can sit back and enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. (08) 8552 1011.
- Views from the Bluff are spectacular – but locals warn the 500m climb requires some moderate fitness.
Did you know?
Prior to European settlement the local Aborigines called the area around Victor Harbor, 'Wirramulla'. It was in this area, as early as 8 April, 1802, that Matthew Flinders commanding the 'Investigator' and Nicholas Baudin, the French explorer in 'Le Geographe', came across each other. It was on the basis of this unlikely event that Flinders named the stretch of coastline Encounter Bay. A plaque commemorating this event is located on 'The Bluff' at the southern end of Encounter Bay.
